How to Participate

Each year, we invite submissions of original, published books of fiction (all genres), nonfiction, poetry, and children’s and young adult literature. These may be submitted by authors, illustrators, publicists, or other publishing professionals.

We encourage submissions by individuals from diverse backgrounds, including race and ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation, class, and/or abilities. To view complete submission guidelines and instructions, click here. Submissions for the 2019 Festival are closed as of October 1, 2018. Submissions for the 2020 Festival will open in June 2019.

Lit Fair

The annual Lit Fair will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2019, in the Charlottesville Omni Hotel Atrium. A juried event, the Lit Fair showcases the work of small presses and publishers, literary magazines, resources for professional writers, and non-scholarly journals from the region and around the country. Please contact the Lit Fair coordinator for more details.

Volunteers play a big role in the Festival, contributing more than 6,000 hours each year. The Festival needs office volunteers during the year and many on-site volunteers during the Festival. Click here to sign up to volunteer.

Make a Contribution

Those wishing to make individual contributions to the support of the Festival may do so online, or by sending a check made out to the “Virginia Humanities” to the Festival address. Please indicate (in the remark line) that a donation is intended for the Book Festival. Learn more about how to make a contribution.

Sponsor a Program

Cash and in-kind sponsorships are available for the Virginia Festival of the Book. Please contact Festival director Jane Kulow at or 434-924-7548 to find out how your business or organization can participate in this signature event for the Charlottesville and Albemarle County community. The Festival draws more than 20,000 attendees from across the mid-Atlantic each spring.

Benefits vary with the event and size of sponsorship and may include: name and logo displayed on the website and in printed materials; name and logo displayed at the event; public announcement of sponsorships; complimentary tickets and special seating, as well as other benefits.

Partner with the Festival

Organizations, agencies, departments, or other community groups that wish to partner with us to plan and/or host a Festival program should contact Festival staff prior to October 1 with a brief proposal. Please refer to our submission guidelines for details about priorities and program structures. Community partners have the opportunity to propose a program and help promote it, provide a venue, and/or support the work of the Festival through a sponsorship.
